Printing a QR code that actually scans: size, contrast, and the two design mistakes
A QR that works on screen can fail once printed. Three properties decide it, and two of them are the first things a designer changes.
A QR code is not a decorative image that we also ask to be readable. It is a data carrier with tolerances, and it stops working all at once when you exceed them — not gradually.
Size: one simple rule
A phone reader needs each small square — each module — to cover several pixels on its sensor. The field rule fits in one ratio:
the QR side ≈ one tenth of the reading distance.
A QR read at 30 cm, on a table: 3 cm across is enough. A QR on a shop window, read from the pavement at 2 metres: it needs 20 cm. A high poster read at 5 metres: 50 cm, and that is not negotiable.
Below that, it does not work "less well": it does not work.
The quiet zone
A QR needs emptiness around it — the equivalent of four modules wide, on all four sides. That is what lets the reader find where the code begins.
It is the constraint most often lost in layout, because it looks like decorative margin. Pushing the QR to the edge of a flyer, or running a rule right against it, breaks detection before decoding even starts.
Contrast, and colour
Modules must be dark on light. The reverse — light on dark — fails on many readers, which look for dark modules by convention.
A pastel brand ink is the classic trap. We measured it on our own pages: a QR in light purple on white, at 3.37:1 contrast, does not decode — tested across seven resolutions and four image treatments. The same drawing in black passes immediately.
If you insist on your colour, take a very dark one. Midnight blue, deep burgundy, forest green all work. A pastel, never.
The two design mistakes
These are the two changes a designer makes spontaneously, and they are exactly the two that break it.
- Spacing the modules out. Dots separated by a little white look good. But the three corner squares are solid bands in a strict ratio, and chopping them up makes them unfindable. The reader is not even looking at the content: it cannot find the code.
- An oversized logo. A centre logo is perfectly possible — the format's error correction covers it — but it eats a reserve. Past roughly a quarter of the side, there is nothing left for wear, folds and glare.
Test on paper, not on screen
The test that counts happens on the final medium, at the real distance, under the light of the place. A QR validated on a desktop screen can fail on matte paper, in a dim room, with a three-year-old phone.
Print one copy. Scan it from where it will be read. It takes two minutes, and it is the only measurement that applies to what your customers will actually hold.
